Feather Blooms...Love em' or hate em'?

So we had the neatest idea of a new hair thingie to make the other day. Feather Blooms! We were pretty excited to have a new creation to make and have gotten some great feedback about them. Only a few people think that they are a little WiLd for their tastes.

What do you think????

Saturday Night Fever

Ahhhhh. Almost 8:30pm on a beautiful Saturday night. Just put two of my little monsters (I mean children) to bed. Oh, how my ears have been begging for silence!

Aside from our wild and crazy children, C and I have actually gotten a lot of work done in our shop these past few days. New clips, new bows, and new bow holders. Please check them out! If I can get my youngest to settle down, I may even be able to get more done. :o) Stay tuned!

Take Me Out to the Ballgame!

We had an AMAZING day today on our trip to Petco Park in San Diego, CA for the Padres vs Rockies baseball game! Perfect weather, greats seats, even greater company to share the experience with!

With our backpack of snacks and sunscreen, three adults, two teens and five littles enjoyed a tour of the stadium. We got to sit right behind the Rockies dugout where our Rockies gear wearing t-ball players were able to get some autographs! Ubaldo Jiminez signed Morgen & Cadens hats. Jimenez pitched the first no-hitter in Colorado Rockies history on April 17, 2010 against the Braves. All Star Carlos Gonzalez also signed their hats. Gonzalez won the NL Batting title in 2010, a gold glove and was runner up for NL MVP

We then moved over to "the park at the park". While we sat and watched (ok not really) the game, the kiddos played in the sand and enjoyed some games hosted by the Padres employees in the sandbox.

If you should have the opportunity to make it to a game at Petco park, they allow you to bring in snacks and drinks in closed containers (bigtime money-saver!) There is a playground for the kids to play and a GREAT hill for them to roll down!

Check out their web site for information and tickets:

What Is This Pajarete You Speak Of?

When I was a kid, every few years we would get to visit family in Mexico.  We would travel here, there and everywhere, but mostly we would spend our time in Mazamitla, Jaliso.  Mazamitla, from the Nahuatl word "place where arrows to hunt deer are made", was founded by the Aztecs in 1165 and is located in south-central Jalisco.

On our visits, my grandpa would take us to "el pajarete" (pronounced pah-hah-REH-teh).  For all of you skim milk, pregnant, or squeamish people, this may not be for you.  Early on a Sunday morning (or any other day really) you gather up a few important items; mugs, sugar, a cinnamony Mexican "barra de chocolate", and a bottle of the good stuff . . . grain alcohol, tequila or something similar.   How early is early?  Early as in when the dairy farmers are getting up to milk the cows early.  Some may still be hung over from the night before.

It isn't unusual for someone in the group to be carrying a guitar.  If you are going to have a slightly alcoholic beverage or three so early in the morning, someone is going to break out in song!  It usually is much more fun to go for pajarete with a group of people anyway and someone is very likely to believe they really can sing!

Once you get to the farm, everyone grabs their clay mug and in it goes the sugar, chocolate, and the alcohol or "piquete".  The alcohol is meant to kill any bacteria in the milk.  It only takes a splash but some mugs may have more than others and those are the people who will be singing by the time you leave!   The mug is then filled with the milk straight from the cow and makes a frothy, chocolaty drink which is pajarete!

Other Unusual Mexican Drinks

- Tejuino: a drink made of the same "masa" (dough) used to make tamales and tortillas mixed with water and sweetened with "piloncillo" (cone-shaped brown sugar). It is boiled to thicken and then allowed to slightly ferment.  It is served cold with lemon or lime juice, a pinch of salt and a scoop of shaved ice.

- Aguamiel: The nectar from the "maguey" plant.

- Pulque: Pulque comes from harvesting mature "maguey" plants.  The top of the plant is cut off and a hole is carved in the middle of the plant then covered.  The nectar which seeps into the hole is called "aguamiel"  (about a gallon two times a day for many months).  It is stored and allowed to ferment in large containers, often with pineapple or other fruits, and reaches about 6% alcohol in just a couple of days.

- Tepache (teh-PAH-cheh): Drink made with pineapple, water and piloncillo which is mixed together and allowed to ferment, but not too much or you will have vinegar!

Vintage Wedding

Today I had the pleasure of delivering the biggest cake I have ever made to an absolutely beautiful wedding where Erica and CJ will start their lives together!  Many, many (many) hours later . . . a beautiful vintage inspired paisley hat box wedding cake sporting a porcelain couple staring through a gold gilded photo frame.

The wedding reception took place at Memories, a dance hall right out of the early/mid 1900's located in Whittier, CA  . . .  the perfect setting for the beautiful bride who looked like she stepped right out of a calendar! Perfect pinup beauty right down to her very red lips.

This is the result of the many hours (and many eggs) I used to create this master piece!  Congratulations Erica and CJ!

(Check out Memories web site if you are close by and want to go to a Lindy Hop or take
West Coast Swing or Lindy lessons! Memories)

Laryngitis

....an inflammation of your voice box (larynx) from overuse, irritation or infection.... I sit here and ponder over this diagnosis that has taken hold of my voice for almost a week now. I guess we don't realize how precious our voices are until we can't use them. I can't sing, I can't holler, I can't tell my kids to cut it out....I can only croak. My dr kindly perscribes me a Z pack, mostly because she can't find anything else wrong with me and it's better to take "just in case." She tells me I need lots of sleep (yeah right!) and NO talking. (again....yeah right!)

So here I am voiceless, feeling like poo and staring at mounds of clean laundry begging to be folded. All I really want to do is crawl in bed with my laptop (if it weren't broken) and browse the internet for new crafting ideas. I am in the mood to "make some new things." I go through phases of projects as often as I change clothes...Ha!

Any suggestions?

~Keelie

Welcome Home Endeavour

Welcome Home Endeavour

Today was the final homecoming for the spaceship Endeavour.  My boys and I watched the launch and the landing on YouTube (see links below) and they LOVED it.

Endeavour made it's first flight on May 7, 1992 – May 16, 1992 with it's last flight being May 16, 2011 – June 1, 2011.  Named after British Royal Navy vessel which was commanded by James Cook on his 1st voyage, the Endeavour replaced the Challenger after the 1986 launch disaster.

If you have kids, and even if you don't, be sure to watch the start and end of Endeavours final mission!
